Someone in the United States is accidentally injured every second and killed every three minutes by a preventable event, such as a car crash, truck accident, or a trip and fall. Nearly 15,000 more people died accidentally in 2016 than in 2015, the largest single-year % rise since 1936, according to NSC.

In 2017, the U.S. experienced 169,936 preventable deaths and 47.2 million injuries, according to NSC. These deaths and injuries amounted to over $1 billion in costs.

In 2017, there were 311,679 crashes involving motor vehicles in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDoT). Injury crashes accounted for 21.5% of these crashes (66,889), while fatal crashes (998) accounted for less than 1% of these crashes.

What To Do If You Are Injured

If you have been injured in an accident, your first concern should be your health and safety. After an accident, you should:

  1. Seek medical attention. Even if you feel like your injures are not serious, you should still seek medical attention. It’s important to remember that injuries are not always visible and they don’t always exhibit symptoms right away. Over time, brain injuries and other internal injuries, for example, can worsen and lead to lifelong disabilities or even death. Furthermore, if you don’t seek medical attention promptly, the compensation amount available can be significantly reduced.
  2. File a report with police. Your personal injury case, your compensation, and your health depend on filing a police report. Your health and economic well-being may be negatively impacted if you do not take proper steps. For this reason, don’t hesitate to file a police report because it will help your injury claim.
  3. Be careful when speaking to others following the accident. If you are unsure about what has occurred, it’s best to keep quiet and wait for the police and emergency medical professionals to arrive at the scene. Speaking about the accident could be used against you by an insurance company. It’s generally best to let the evidence speak for itself. A lawyer can ensure that your story is told with accuracy and the facts are presented in the best manner possible. This is how you will get the justice and compensation you deserve.
  4. Keep track of all medical bills and expenses associated with your injuries. Keep a record of all expenses and costs that relate to the accident, including doctor appointments, how you feel, your sleep patterns, lost wages, and more. Any relevant info that you are able to document will help you receive fair compensation.
  5. Don’t sign anything before first consulting with an attorney. Insurance companies will use tricky tactics that pressure accident victims into settling. They may ask you to sign forms and if you sign them, you’re signing away your rights away to take the case to court. They want you to sign the document so that things can be in their favor. Don’t do it.
  6. Don’t settle without the help of an attorney. Insurance companies typically always have a team of lawyers because legal representation is essential, and they know that. It is wise to have an attorney present during negotiations. With the help of a Danville personal injury lawyer, you will be able to negotiate a full and fair settlement that covers all your past, present, and future expenses related to your injuries.
