Pedestrian Killed Along Roadway Near Danville

On Saturday, September 4th  at 11:15 PM a man walking along the side of Georgetown Road just south of I-74 near Danville, IL was struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian did not survive the hit, although no injuries were sustained to the driver.

Although many times injuries are uncommon while walking along the road, we are never certain they will not occur. Walking along the road at night can be extremely dangerous; vehicles of any type can possibly hit us. To avoid this, we must ensure we take every preventative measure. When walking beside any roadway at night, it is important to properly equip yourself against all dangers:

Wear bright clothing: Wearing bright clothing gives drivers a better chance to see you on the road.

Walk against the flow of traffic: Walking with your back turned to oncoming traffic is dangerous. When walking along a road, it is safest to walk facing oncoming traffic so you can see everything that is occurring around you.

Walk on a sidewalk whenever possible: Walking on the sidewalk whenever there is one available ensures the safest possible route. Sidewalks are designed to allow distance between a person and a vehicle.

Wear reflective clothing: It is important to make yourself seen to all drivers. Sometimes reflective gear is necessary to do this. Reflective gear comes in many forms: hats, shirts, pants, shoes, and jackets. Investing in a piece of reflective clothing can alert drivers to your presence along the roadway.

Be aware of your surroundings: Being aware of the sights and sounds around you are imperative to your safety. Pay attention to drivers who are swerving in and out of the lanes down the road. Make sure to avoid walking near these drivers as to not put yourself in harms way. Listen to the sounds of approaching vehicles.

As a driver, we may experience pedestrians walking along the road or crossing a street. Drivers have the responsibility to be aware of their surroundings. To ensure the safety of pedestrians near your car, you should:

  • Never text while driving
  • Drive with your headlights on
  • Pay attention to the road in front of you
  • Eliminate all other distractions

Although we can do our best to protect ourselves against drivers, it is not always possible to prevent harm from coming our way. Unfortunately, people are killed due to distracted drivers, such as in this case. When tragedies like this happen, it is important to know that you have options. Hiring an attorney after any accident is important so your needs are represented and cared for every step of the way.
