Crib side cushions implicated in increased infant deaths

The Washington University School of Medicine researchers recommended the banning of the sale or use of soft cushion pads in cribs, sometimes called crib bumpers, across the nation after a study published in November linked these accessories to an increase in infant deaths. Babies reportedly may die from suffocation if their cribs have soft padding on the sides. Researchers stated that there were 23 infant fatalities from 2006 to 2012 that were caused by these bumpers. The study also discovered that many of the infant deaths recorded since 1985 could have been avoided if the cribs did not have bumpers.
