Head-on Collision on Illinois 1 near Bismarck

A head-on collision occurred on Illinois 1, south of Vermilion County Road 2820 N, which is about a mile northwest of Bismark, at 7:45 a.m. on Friday morning. One person was killed, and a second was injured. A 47-year-old man was headed south when his car veered into the northbound lane, hitting another car head-on. His car then flipped and caught on fire. The driver of this vehicle died at the scene. The Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden, who performed an autopsy Saturday, identified the driver as James D. Callahan, 47, of Hoopeston. 

The northbound vehicle that was struck came to a stop in the middle of the road. The driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old woman, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. She was wearing a seatbelt. There has been no more information released about the driver of this vehicle. 

The accident caused Route 1 to be closed for several hours on Friday. The Illinois State Police and the Vermillion County Coroner’s office are investigating the accident.

Two killed in Bridgeview motorcycle accident

Two persons were killed after the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a vehicle in southwest Bridgeview, an article by the Chicago Sun-Times Voices reported on June 1.

Police Commander Peter Kokinis stated that a motorcycle containing Mark Hulihan, 42, and an unidentified woman in her forties was reportedly driving in the 8500 block of Harlem Avenue at around 1:00 a.m. when they were struck by a car. Hulihan was brought to the hospital after the crash, but he was declared dead only a couple of hours later. His female companion was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Although it appears to be a tragic accident, investigation of the accident will continue.

2 Shelby residents killed in Illinois crash

Two people were killed in a three-vehicle crash in Illinois on Thursday, September 26. The driver of a 2012 Dodge Journey, 64-year old Laura J. Basham, and her passenger, Barry N. Basham, 61, died at the scene.

The accident occurred at around 8:25 a.m., according to the police. Basham was behind a semitrailer due to a construction on Ill. 1/17 near 9250 East Road. A 2013 semitrailer, driven by 37-year old Krzysztof Sulkowski, hit the Dodge and also crashed into the semitrailer driven by by Troy J. Farney, 42.

A 2007 Toyota driven by Janice J. Billadeau, 36 avoided the crash by veering off the road.

Sulkowski and Farney were taken to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the state police.
