IKEA lamps recalled after one death and one injury

In mid-December, IKEA recalled millions of childrens lamps because of the strangulation threat that they posed to children.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that 2.9 million “Smila” wall-mount lamps were affected by the recall. The recall was issued after one child reportedly died and another one was injured by strangulation. Both incidents occurred in Europe.

The lamp was sold worldwide from 1999 until May 2013. The lamps were manufactured in a variety of colors and shapes and ranged in price from $10 to $13. Consumers are advised not to use the lamps and to contact IKEA for a free kit to mount the cord on the wall.
