NFL and players settle brain injury lawsuit for $765 million

The National Football League agreed on Thursday, August 29 to settle with former and current football players $765 million as compensation for the brain-related injuries suffered by the players.

In the brain-injury lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Pennsylvania Eastern District by around 4,500 former NFL players, led by Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots running back veteran Kevin Turner, the agreed settlement will be distributed over a period of at least 20 years, with the amount considered to be very minor compared to the billions of revenue the NFL receives annually.

The settlement, which came only a week before the season starts, was welcomed by the league, particularly by the team managers who no longer have to worry about long trial dates, which could affect team performances.

NFL Executive Vice President Jeffrey Pash said the deal will benefit their program of providing more safety precautions during games and team practice, geared towards protecting the enduring health and welfare of NFL players.
