Boeing and Airbus check 787 planes due to fire safety concerns

Distress beacons were said to be the cause of a fire that happened on an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane while parked at the Heathrow airport in London on July 12. Although no one was injured in the blaze, British aviation authorities have recommended the removal of all the Dreamliner beacons as a safety precaution.

After a major inspection by the British Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), they reported that there was a high probability of a fire breaking out after the beacon’s battery cells were found to be damaged.  In a related report, damaged battery wirings have also been found on distress beacons in both 787 planes of United Airlines and All Nippon Airways of Japan.

U.S. and European aviation authorities required all 787 planes to undergo inspection of their Honeywell-made beacons.
