Statewide pool drain check to occur after national recall

A national safety recall has lead to state safety officials in Illinois to issue an inspection on pool drainage systems.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of nearly one million drainage grates after they were marked incorrectly.

The items may be a drowning hazard after it was found that the vacuum effect may be too strong and trap swimmers at the bottom of the pool, especially small children. These drains were designed to promote drain safety, but were done improperly. Illinois safety officials will now send out notices for pool operators to check their pool grates to make sure that they are not dangerous.
