Illinois man killed in mine accident

A worker employed with Peabody Energy Corp. was killed on July 9 in a workplace accident in a mine in Illinois.

The mine is now closed in order for an investigation to begin so that the details of the tragic accident can be known. The accident happened underground and involved a shuttle a car.

Last month, the U.S. Mine Health and Safety Administration allegedly found safety issues at the mine and wanted to expedite the process for fear of dangerous work conditions that could harm the employees.

The mine has previously been cited for not providing the adequate protection for roof falls and other violations that totaled $230,000 in fines.
